The new romantics is my early series in my broader body of work around masculinity in Morocco.
It was obvious for me, to somehow be interested in masculinity in a landscape where men take over in quantity both private and public space.
My interest did not come from sociological study but from my own personal presence as woman in my country. This resulted in a four year long visual reaserch that started with "the new romantics".
I used to often bu flowers and each time the sellers would offer me one or two alongside beautiful words. This didn't always match with their behavior prior to this very moment.
Their virile side would suddenly fade out as soon as flowers were involved. It made me want to reflect this sensitivity and tenderness, usually deeply hidden.
I have decided to lengthen these short moments in photo sessions through which I would ask the boys to pick their own favorite flowers,as well as imagine who they would like to give this flower to and how.
They then modeled the way they thought was the best to reflect their feelings.
A personal intention of mine was also to break the stereotype on Moroccan men and give out a new narrative.
The new romantics is a pop and playful personal interpretation of young Moroccan men acknowledging their vulnerability during a photo session.
